Here we are on the outer edge of summer. I’ve noticed myself holding my breath the last couple of days, trying to suspend the last slow, honeyed gasps of the season; tiptoeing around the onset of a transition that I equally welcome and dread.

For weeks and weeks I’ve been writing, working, and practicing around the edges of my son and daughter’s steady presence. Next week they’ll return to school, initiating a new albeit familiar rhythm. Usually at this point I’m frayed around my own edges and desperate to turn the page. But this season has proven gentler than those past, the exhale has just kept going…
This summer something has been different.
