Anyone else feeling a bit rough this week? I’ve just put the kettle on. Pull up a chair, I’m making you lemon ginger tea…
slice and squeeze lemon
grate ginger
splash apple cider vinegar
little honey spoon
once boiling, pour slow
stir lovingly with attentionÂ
Morning lemon water, it’s such an annoying *wellness* cliché, isn’t it? Honestly, I really prefer a breakfast brownie (my sacred Sunday tradition). Even so, cold season or not, I’ve met most days like this for as long as I can remember… It’s less about the beverage and more about the making way, clearing attention as much as digestion.Â
Flick to boil, place a few sensory ingredients into the favorite mug, take a deep breath in… and a slow breath out… Even on the most chaotic mornings, this is something I can manage. Sometimes I sit and drink it quietly, listening to the quiet. Others, I’ll get onto my mat and sip it throughout some gentle movement. And then there’s the inevitable interruptions that leave me one handed and multitasking, pouring cereal and squeezing small humans.
It doesn’t really matter what’s happening as it goes down. This momentary mug of sunshine has built equity with me over the years, earned my trust in its — in my — ability to steady in the time it takes steam to rise. It’s one of these little practices that has become so habitual that I feel off if I don’t get to it for whatever reason (which is rare). Like brushing my teeth, I feel a bit dirty if I don’t do it. I can go without, but I feel like I’m running out the door with an untied shoe.Â
Since it’s February, colds abound, inviting you to join — or maybe yours is a coffee or chai? All that really matters is your making way, for yourself, in the moment.
Drink up… and let me know how you get on today.
