While you might assume that recovery happens by default when you push back from your desk, have that post-run shower, or sip a glass of wine on a Friday night, rejuvenation isn’t automatic. If you ever struggle to ease the tension of a hard effort, lie awake at night with a busy mind, or still feel a frazzled undercurrent even after a weekend away from work, you know what I’m talking about. Stopping work doesn’t mean you’re not working. Recovery isn’t as straightforward as slipping between the sheets.

Rest is a skill that needs to be activated and strengthened, just like a muscle.
